I have a secret to tell
you.
I have a new obsession.
Total Ninja has opened
in Manchester and I am hooked!
I have been into OCR (Obstacle Course
Racing) since I did the original Tough Guy back in 1999.
OCR is true “Functional Fitness” and
I was surprised how quickly my upper body fatigued due to lack of
hanging/pulling endurance.
Simply by hanging from a bar until fatigue I can improve my functional grip strength.
I would then progress this to swinging on the bar
There were many types of gripping I was not used to.
Despite being a Climber, the grip endurance was the main issue I was having.
I kept "pumping out" on my forearms (should have brought my Compex!)
The other issue was my power to weight ratio which is ever decreasing!
As for balance, I was also a bit rusty and creamed in on the rolling steps many times before changing my technique and then my success.
What you wear on your feet will also make a massive difference.
I felt some pain in my big toe from repeatedly jumping for the top of the half pipe on the wall.
This is because you are jumping upwards on a surface that is also vertically inclining, which is unusual.
I don't recommend minimalist shoes for this.
In addition, the grip on the sole of your shoes is everything when it comes to the spider wall.
Wrong shoe = No glue

Injury Prevention Tips:
1. Wear gloves unless your hands are well conditioned they will rip
2. Wear the right footwear, particularly the sole needs to be grippy
3. Rest sufficiently between Ninja runs to avoid over training
4. Go home when you are too fatigued to maintain performance
5. Learn how to break fall or Commando roll out when you fall
It's not as easy as when you watch Ninja Warrior on TV!
